Arthritis Facts

Detailed Arthritis Symptoms Joints pain can be a result of injury affecting ligaments, bursae or tendons surrounding the joint. The injury can lead to damage to ligaments, cartilage and bone joints. Common symptoms include:

RA(Rheumatoid Arthritis)

RA is a chronic auto immune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues including the delicate tissues that encapsulate most joints. The disease normally affects the wrists, knuckles, balls of the feet and or knees but can affect any joint in the body.

The RA progress over time and the disease shows the following :

Synovial Tissue becomes inflamed.

The RA is characterized by inflammation of the synovial fluid. The inflammation of synovial tissue causes pain, stiffness and swelling in joints. This is called synovitis.

Pannus tissue forms.

Inflammation in the tissue causes the cells to divide and multiply causing the synovial tissue to thicken resulting in swelling and pain. As cell division continues cell growth expands to the joint space. This termed as pannus or rheumatoid pannus.

Cartilage and other joint tissues damaged by accident or other activities.

The pannus cells release enzymes that damage the cartilage and underlying bone. The damage alters or can alter the alignments, leading to further pain and deformities

Asthma, a respiratory disease characterized by narrowing of the airways happens as the body response to exposure to cold air, allergens in the air, emotional stress or heavy exercise. With the narrowing of the airways, symptoms such as tightness of the chest, wheezing noise while breathing, coughing and shortness of breath appear in the patients

The narrowing of airways happens due to the blockage caused by accumulation of Kapha in the airways resulting in the interruption of the flow of air to the lungs and difficulty in breathing.

The causes of Asthma are, excessive intake of vata (cold), consuming kapha aggravating food items, weakening of the lung tissues, problems caused by lung diseases and Environmental and lifestyle factors. Consuming cold or stale foods, not easy to digest lead to the formation of ama (mucus) causing blockage in the respiratory channel and difficulty in breathing.

Living in cold and damp environment is also a contributory factor for asthma. Ayurvedic management of Shwasa includes Abhyanga, Swedhana, Vamana or Virechana, Rasayana measures for non reccurence of the condition etc.

Cervical Spondylosis, a kind of Arthritis affecting cervical vertebrae is marked by pain at the back of the neck (radiating towards the upper limbs) and vertigo while bending downwards, accompanied often by sensory loss and numbness in the upper limbs.

In Ayurveda, it may be correlated with Apabahuka, Grivasandhigatvata, etc. Some degenerative changes in the cervical vertebrae, when combined with trauma or incorrect posture, while sitting or sleeping leads to themanifestation of Cervical Spondylosis

Treatment includes Nasyam, Abhyangam, Ilakkizhi ,Greevavasthi, etc.

It has problems like the basic anti-aging care and the medical management diseases.

Ayurveda has rich potential to promote health of the elderly, besides the scope of rejuvenation and promotion of longevity.

Geriatric care has to address two-fold problems, firstly the basic anti-aging care to retard the rate of physiological aging and secondly the medical management of diseases and disorders occurring in old age such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, diabetes, senile dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, parkinsonism, degenerative arthritis, osteoporosis, opportunistic infections, prostatic enlargement, degenerative eye diseases like cataract, a range of angioplasties, neurodegenerative diseases and senile psychoses causing major morbidity in old age.

Ayurveda, being fundamentally the science of life and longevity, address these issues in a unique holistic manner not merely with biological care, but also by encompassing the psychosocial and spiritual aspects.

Gastric problems affect the stomach and its functioning. In Ayurveda, Agni, a Sanskrit derivation for digestive fire controls your experiences, emotions, impressions and even expressions. This largely depends of the typeof food we consumeand affects our sensory portalslike eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin.

Our body remains healthy when there is a balance of Agni in our body. The existence of Agni or the digestive fire creates healthy tissues that reduces and eliminates waste products or Srothas and produces a subtle substance called Ojas. This substance means strengthand immunity playing an important role in the overall development of the individual.

If our body is weakened through low levels of Ojas or strength, we lack in the productivity. This can be caused through less amount of food intake, lack of activity, negative emotional energy or unhealthy daily routine.

Once the levels of this substance go down, it produces toxins that get accumulated in our body. In Ayurvedic terms, a harmful substance known as “ama” is produced that becomes the root cause for most of the diseases.

Gynaecological Problems

Gynaecology, a term related to treating women’s health issues resulting from irregular menstrual problems or other gynecological issues. Care should be taken while dealing with them.

Ayurvedic treatments include proper arrangement of the three doshas namely Vata, Patta and Kapha as per the directions of Ayurvedic Gynaecologists. Quite often, diseases arise due toimproper food intakes and regimen. The food requirements vary and pave the way for numerous diseases if, proper care is not taken. Ayurveda follows the periodic Panchakarma Therapies to determine the diagnosis and elimination of problems that women face. Treatments, internal and external through use of oils and ointments or powdered pastes help in curing of disorders.

Treatment of Headaches by Ayurveda

A classic term known as Shiroshoola for headaches with watering of eyes, bleeding of nose orgiddiness depending on the body energy aggravated. An improper diet and lifestyles can also cause headaches to occur often.

According to the elements of the Ayurveda, any impairment of vata (air), and kapha (water) can lead to obstruction in the head leading to headaches. According to the Ayuvedic physicians, when the pain in the head intensifies the Pitta dosha vitiates to a burning sensation in the head resulting in headaches. Individuals suffering from headaches may have symptoms such asnausea, and vomiting.

Traditional Ayurveda considers headache arising due to sensitive nervous system and impaired digestion. Improper diet causes the cells in the body to aggravate Pittas meaning fire leading to headaches. In this aggravated state, ama or waste materialsget stored leading to continuous headaches. This ama isthen stored in the manovahi srothasor mind channels which aggravates the headache.

Immunity helps the individual fight against prolonged ailments in areas like physical, emotional and environmental. Proper intake of food anda balanced diet can reduce the immunity problems to a large extent.

Immunity can be classified as Innate and Humoral immunity scientifically. As per the Ayurvedic Medicinal doctrine, a person is composed of five basic elements of life—Space, air, water and earth.

The five elements combine to form three physiological humors known as Tridosha. These humors are entitled as vata, pitta and kapha.

Vata dosha: A combination of space and air responsible for movement.

Pitta dosha: Made up of fire and is solely responsible for digestion and other metabolic functions.
Kapha dosha: Made of earth and water aims for structure and stability of the body.

A mix upof these elements represents the genomic individuality through their tendencies for balance, disease, behaviors and temperament. The three elements named Prana, Tejas and Soma help ion balancing of the human body.

In Ayurveda, conception takes place when a healthy sperm, healthy ovum and a healthy uterus are available. For both men and women to be sexually healthy, a reproductive issue known as shukra dhatu should be active.

In women, the Shukra dhatu is the ovum and is part of the monthly cycle whereas in men it’s the semen formed due to sexual stimulation. In Ayurvedic concepts, the Shukra dhatu creates a long chain of metabolic transformations.

The process begins with digestion of food to transformation of blood to the nutrient fluid, blood, muscles, bone, bone marrow and then to the Shukra dhatu. A healthy issue depends on the healthiness of other issues in the body.

Regaining a healthy condition for causes of infertility should be carried by methods like Shodhana, Abhynaga and Njavaraandother techniques. Some of the main treatments include Uttara Vasthi and Brimhana Vasthi.

Insomnia in Ayurveda, also termed as Anidra is responsible for imbalance in sleep. From the ayurvedic perspective, the five doshas or humors are completely responsible for Tarpaka Kapha, Sadhak Pitta or Prana Vatha.

Tarpaka Kapha is a sub of Kapha (water) that nourishes the brain cells and facilitates for good sleep. Improper nourishment of such doshas leadsto insomnia. This controlsemotions, desires, decisiveness and spirituality. The imbalance of such doshas makes a person demanding andworkaholic

Prana Vatha, a sub category of vata (air) is linked to insomnia, worry, anxiety and depression. This dosha makes the nervous system to be sensitive.

Each disease varies from user to user. And so, Ayurveda performs treatments accordingly. Some of the possible treatment includes Panchakarma and others.

Menopause is a transition that occurs in women at the age of 45-55 years. Menopause caused when the menstrual cycle stops and the sex hormone levels decreases including estrogen. In Ayurveda, menopause is ageing and not a disease.

Surgical Menopause

Ladies whose ovaries are surgically removed are prone to such possibilities.

Migraine Headaches are an outcome of specific activation changes within the brain. The outcome of this migraine causes severe headache when exposed to light, strange sounds or smells.

Ayurvedic Facts about Migraine

Migraine or Pittaj shiriashool has been a disease affected largely by both mind andbody. Migraine can be caused by an imbalance of the Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. Other causes that could be factors for migraine are mental stress, reading in lowlight, lack of sleep or poor diet.

Ayurvedic treatments for migraine include Shiro lepa, Shiro dhara, Kavala graham , sneha nasya and shiro Vasthi.

Bones support the body and are living issues maintaining a balance through bone creating activities. Factors such as advancing age, low BMI, lack of weight bearing exercise, excessive alcohol, soft drinks consumption, smoking and other causes lead to Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition of the skeletal system characterized by persistent deterioration of bone tissue micro-architecture showing a decrease in bone strength and lesser bone density. This can occur at any age and is mostly prevalent in Asian small boned women over 60 years.

Bones in large porous areas developing in the trabecular bone as opposed to the cortical bones weakening the bone structure

Accumulation of excessive fat in the body leads to obesity. People who generally weigh morethan 30kg/m2 within the range 25-30 kg/m2 are defined as overweight.

People who suffer from obesity are prone to cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis and depression

Unhealthy dieting habits can lead to obesity and other related diseases. In Ayurveda, this state is termed as athisthoulym. Herbal juices and various treatments like udthwarthana, yogavastahi and abhyanga can control obesity.

Our senses are controlled and accessed by the peripheral and central nervous system. Paralysis results from permanent loss of muscle movement of the body causing irrecoverable damage to theaffected individual.

Disruption of any of the muscles and nerves can cause paralysis for anybody at anytime. Muscle weaknesses may lead to loss of ability to move the muscles. Ayurvedic physicians follow the treatment through techniques like Prana vayu. The treatment includes the following:

Pizichil: The message therapy with the process involving massaging the patient’s body with a cloth dipped in warm medicated oil to reduce the pain in the affected areas.

Sridhora: An amazing body therapy for improving the nervous system of the individual. The warm oil is then poured as a continuous stream over the for head or the “anja marma” where the nerves are concentrated.

Sneha Vasthi: detoxification process therapy known as Panchakarma. All harmful toxins are flushed out from the lower body.

Mental illness is caused by gunic and doshic imbalance leading to understanding difficulties and clouding of comprehension activities.

Threeaspects to Ayurvedic treatments

Samshamana or pacification (which over time—months to years — re-balances the doshas and gunas) – Samshodhana or deep cleansing (which over a shorter time –weeks to months — removes excess doshas and gunas) – Rasayana or revitalization (which over one‘s lifetime strengthens specific weaknesses, prevents the recurrence of the disease and promotes sattvoguna)

Samshamana therapies subsume two vital components which enhance the return of the vitiated humor(s) to equilibrium without disturbing of the other non-vitiated doshas.

Psoriasis a medical condition in which the skin produces plaques of thickened scaling skin that’s non-contagious. The dry skin scales result because of rapid proliferation of skin cells. Abnormal production of special white blood cells called T-Lymphocytes causes the skin of elbows, knees and scalp to shed like scales.

In Ayurveda treatment, Psoriasis is related with sidhma kustha, a generic term for psoriasis. According to the laws of nature, severity of disease varies from person to person. And so, treatments include Snehapanam, Lepam, virechana, vamana or thakradhara.

In Ayurveda, treatment of skin diseases depends on the types of skins.Vata skin is generally dry, thin, cool to touch and gets easily dehydrated. It’s also vulnerable todry weather, windy chilly climate. Pitta mostly fire, suits breakouts, photosensitivity, less tolerance to food and fieriness in temperaments.

Skins of these are warm and easy to touch and prone to freckles and moles growth.Kapha Pitta or oily skin are sensitive and generally dry during chilly weather.

Gouts are a painful disease resulting from inflammation and deposition of uric acid in the cartilage of joints. Its symptom begins with a big toe causing to swell and pain. It later on spreads to the other parts like ankles, knees, joints of hands and feet, wrist and elbow.

Gout also termed as vataraktha, impairment caused by heavy intake of spicy, sour, salty, alkaline and heavy penetrating foods. The impairment spreads through accumulation at the smallerjoints causing damages to tissues and bones.

Urinary Infections are common conditions that arise when infected by bacteria. The infection begins from the urethra and travels to the bladder and then to other parts of the body. A burning inflammation while urinating and increased frequency of urination are the main symptoms of this disease.
